Trial of Edward Chomiak started Monday in Peace River

Edward Chomiak has finally been brought to trial for some of the most heinous acts in recent history, a double homicide on December 15, 2010 in Falher, Alberta, which is in the Peace River area. Chomiak was found guilty of first degree murder of his ex-wife Melody Perry (45 years old) and second degree murder for killing her daughter, Jerica Bouchard. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison with no chance of parole for Melody’s murder and 15 years in prison with no chance of parole for killing Jerica.

The bodies of the victims were found with multiple gunshots wounds. The cause of death for both victims was due to a flurry of gunfire, supposedly from Chomiak. He was arrested in possession of a .22 rifle, a pistol and 200 rounds of ammunition. During Chomiak’s rampage, Melody Perry made a 911 call while Chomiak was still in her mobile home. The recording was played at trial and Perry could be heard pleading for help from the police. She was hiding in her ensuite bathroom and the shots that killed her could be heard on the 911 recording.

At trial, it was mentioned that Chomiak did not respect a restraining order of the Court filed against him by the two women, later found murdered, and just three days before the deadline the court set for Chomiak to pay delinquent support payments.

The six-year delay in Chomiak being put on trial is an indicator of the health and stability (or lack thereof) of the judicial and jail systems.
