Government Tells Washington Schools to Provide Transgender Facilities

On May 13, 2016, the Obama administration made an announcement that public school districts in Washington, DC are directed to give permission to transgender students to utilize the bathroom and locker rooms that match their gender identity.

It was mentioned in a letter of guidelines that the school may come up with facilities designed for male and female students respectively, but those who are in the state of being transgendered must be allowed access to accommodation that is appropriate to their gender identity. In addition, single-use restrooms are still allowed, provided that using it will not be deemed obligatory for the transgender students alone. It was also given emphasis that this is Obama administration's condition for the school to receive federal funds. The letter outlining the guidelines on the said subject is signed by the officials of the Department of Justice and Department of Education.

This directive was made in the middle of a national conflict on the rights of transgender individuals between the Department of Justice and the North Carolina. The federal government filed a complaint against North Carolina for an anti-LGBT law that prohibits transgender individuals access to multiple-occupancy facilities and to use accommodations that are consistent with their gender identity.

President Obama, in a conference, stated that it is more important not to make anyone feel that he is treated differently. Apart from issues relating to usage of facilities, the officials of the education and justice department will also come up with a list of practices and guidelines on how to deal with sensitive circumstances that involve transgender students, such as the faculty's consideration on the student's pronoun preference and disclosing transgender status.
